Sharing with us what you know about Melaka is a meaningful conversation for mutual benefit. We alone, we understand Melaka only partly.

Merdeka ! Merdeka ! Merdeka ! … now Malaysians shout three times loudly on August 31 each year. In the first celebration of Merdeka, do you know how many times Malayans shouted ?

I find it worthwhile in contributing some time on writing this blog post for my country as August 31 is 19 days away.

Only an assumption, I have always imagined the sacrifices, the sufferings and the joys for all Malaysians who were born before Merdeka.

They would be very proud of what they have done for their country for Malaysia and if they are still alive, they would be happy when Malaysians could celebrate Merdeka in harmony and peace.

Again, on assumption, I could feel the pride of Malaysian who were born after Merdeka. Their pride would never fade, Never !

However, I couldn’t feel how Malaysians who were born decades apart from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, feel. They might be confused between Merdeka and Malaysia Day if they do not appreciate the sacrifices of the early Merdeka fighters and forget about them though they have read history in school. Some may take Merdeka as another public holiday.

This year, I am attending the Merdeka Parade in Melaka again and for Malaysians who love to catch up about Merdeka, interesting reading materials are appended herein.

-          Tun Razak – A Great Leader
-          Hati Merdeka
-          First Malaysia Plan after 1957
-          Merdeka ke 57

In addition to writing for Merdeka, I filmed Merdeka parade over the years.

Sincerely, these reading materials and youtube videos could be of help to future generation, and they may comment on Blog Posts above or make YouTube comments on the LINK and say “Thank you” when they need them as reference for their educative work.

Happy Birthday Malaysians !

After busy whatsapping to my Malay friends on the last two nights of Lailatul Qadar, I lazily woke up to a morning of a mild steel blue-greys sky.

My wife was still sleeping soundly, when I scrapped an apple which I did almost every morning to munch before breakfast.

Since it was a holiday for the first day of Aidilfitri, I reviewed my social media platforms to identify for improvement because I like and has wanted to contribute to Melaka progress. I have this idea of making Melaka a better place since 1986 when I began work with Nationwide Express, a courier services company.

Soon, I got married in 1988 and was pretty busy with my career until a first reunion of the old boys of Malacca High School in 2009. The latest, HSOB 73 - 77 Ramada Plaza. From the Mahkota Century Meet, arose a good compromising of time between career and leisure where friends requested for a platform to keep in touch. That is how I come to be a user of Blogger, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Starting with a Samsung S3 as a hardware tool, slowly I have the Samsung S5, later the S6, a Sony Cyber Shot camera, a Sony 4K Handycam, a Huawei Mate 9 and lately a DJI Spark, spreading over the last 10 years. I have always knew that photography is an expensive hobby but an interesting hobby which goes with experience and patience.

It was a 'gift' when I was seizing some moments with my mini-drone, the DJI Spark within the Medan Selera MBMB courtyard where a row of Portuguese restaurants get busy before sunset to serve dinners.

I met BK Eng.

He gives me 2 photos he shot with his EM5MK2 Pana Leica 100-400mm and here they are :

You see ! ... not only I could enjoy the Portuguese cuisine, but also the Portuguese community abilities on the musical performances and dances, their Intrudu fiesta, San Pedro event, the year end Christmas celebrations but also the nature of beauty, the kingfisher, among the many.

Netherlands is encouraging Melaka to accept the goodness of Bicycle

Ambassador Speech: H.E. Karin Mossenlechner

MacMILLAN’s Bicycle, 1839, have you seen one? Before that year, bicycles were pedal-less and was called a Walk-Along as the user pushed the bike forward by running his feet along the ground. It would be very hard on a climb, isn’t it?

Where there are no bicycles lanes, and bicycles zones, fatal accidents occur when bicycles strike motor vehicles.

Long ago before today, bicycles and jinrikishas outnumber automobiles on the streets of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam.

The North Sea shapes the west and north of Netherlands, and while Germany shared the border on the east, Belgium shared the south with a size a little over Pahang.

The Dutch buildings in Melaka which still stand today are more imposing than other monuments left by other colonial masters, with the Stadhuys built more than three centuries ago.

Melaka in the past were charmed by the Dutch buildings and today, visitors including you will be charmed by the grand old Stadhuys.

The heritage and historical zones in Melaka is today welcoming diversified visitors every day from daylight to night lights and the numbers are growing.

No more on weekends, today these heritage and historical zones in Melaka are cramped with carbon-producing automobiles on weekdays and efforts to overcome the problems is not in sight though over the years, though several parties have offer to solve the depressive traffic conditions when the 60-years old ruling party was administering Malaysia.

Excellent Melaka, Smart, Green and Clean, the Pakatan Harapan Government has take the first step on 101 days, to encore Melaka’s original beauty again by welcoming the “Netherlands and You Vision” of a brand new smart transportation.

The question is, “Will Melaka do it or just listen and the vision fades away?”

In doubt of the goodness of Bicycle & A Better Lifestyle? If you are in doubt, watch Fiona’s, the Netherlander explanation on YouTube.

Her Excellency, Karin Mossenlechner quoted, " There is not many places in the world which has such a rich history like Melaka and has preserved the history so well "

The history of Kedah State Museum started on 3 January 1957 and was known as Kedah Historical Museum. The museum was originally situated on the ground floor of Balai Besar and was opened by Tan Sri Tunku Ismail bin Tunku Yahya, the second Chief Minister of Kedah (1954-1959)

The increase in the collection of exhibits justified the need to look for a new building of its own. Hence on 30 December 1961, the Kedah Historical Museum had a new home in Lebuhraya Darul Aman, Bakar Bata which lies next to the present new State Museum.
The huge response of the public to patronize the museum compelled the State Government to build a more spacious building in 1997.
This new building has a large exhibition hall, a workshop, library and a mini theatrette. There are ten permanent gallery halls to cater for Culture, History, Natural Environment, Statesmen, Transportation, Firearms, Manuscripts, Textile, Art & Craft and Language and Literature.

The building also has amenities such as an elevator, cafeteria, public toilets and a car park.

It has the hill called Gunung Keriang as its backdrop and appears as though it is in the middle of a green carpet during the paddy planting season and turns into a golden appearance when the paddy plant is ripe
.

The Royal Museum is an old palace which was the residence of several former Kedah rulers. It is known by several popular names such as Kota Setar Palace, Mak Wan Besar Palace, Bridal (Pelamin) Palace or Bridal House.

The palace was built in 1735 when Alor Setar became the administrative centre for the state of Kedah during the reign of DYMM Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Mu’adzam Shah II (1710-1778).

During the Second World War the Japanese army occupied the palace. Later the palace was used by a number of voluntary organizations before being abandoned.

In 1983, the palace was renovated to become the Royal Museum and was officially opened on July 15, 1983 in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Kedah Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

An Invitation by Machap Baru to celebrate The Mooncake Festival 2018

https://www.facebook.com/groups/machapbaru/

Six years before I was born, Melaka largest new village is Machap Baru and the inhabitants was 1,650 followed by smaller villages like Machap Umboo and Gadek.

Back then in 1954, Machap Baru got the services of a community hall,  a school, and the settlers houses and pigsties were fenced.

Life behind the fenced barbed wire was difficult and residents had to toil on lands to make ends meet. The population of Machap Baru grew to 1,922 by independence and ranked as the fifth most populated town in the State of Malacca.

After 60 years of independence, which was just celebrated last Friday, the population has reached about 16,000, eight times when Tunku proclaimed Merdeka.

My uncle bought scrap-rubber from estates around Machap when I was school-going and I remember my elder brother travelled to and fro with a small lorry. He would pick a girl from another village in Paya Ikan, to do clerical work in Machap rubber-buying shop. Later on, she married him but unfortunately, he had passed away twenty-one years ago. Three of the earliest FELDA schemes were developed in the 1950s in Melaka, and one of them is in Machap.

I loved the doors of the shop. They are make of solid plank wood measuring some 2 inches thick, 5 inches wide and 7 or 8 feet in height. Each is numbered so that the person who closed the shop for the day know which piece to slot onto the railing first.

Today, Machap Baru continue to keep her very natural beauty.

Cannot find in bigger town, Machap Baru people preserved their houses, and shops of the old version which can be seen today though the structures were introduced by their ancestors who became the earlier settlers.

I bet you. There are not many villages remaining in Malaysia, where modern Malaysians still choose to live in old-constructed houses and feast joyfully in traditional coffeeshops.

I am going to take about the Moon now.

The sun sheds golden radiance during sunrise and sunset and this explained why many people love it; even traveled far distances to capture moments of the sun digitally.

Unlike the sun, the light of the moon sheds a silver mystery over the earth. The moon belongs to the earth, and only reflects 7 percent of the sunlight.

I have heard of the Hindu community celebrating the rising sun, but I know the Chinese community celebrate the Mooncake Festival every year.

The moon is an important element in the Chinese history and the moon has guided the Chinese to prosper till today. In China, temples framed Moon Gates on their walls as a feature of the Chinese gardens attractive to onlookers and has auspicious beauty to the visitors.

Chinese lanterns resembling the shining moon, with the airy spheres inside are lit by waxed candles and they are used to lead the way, whether they are peasants or imperial officers. Other than the lanterns you can see during Mid-Autumn, you can see lanterns of the peranakan heritage in a performing theater.

On the fifteen day of each lunar, without fail, I repeat, without fail, full moon will be a beautiful sight in the dark skies. Dare you doubt, full moon will appear again on Monday 24 September 2018.

To honor the magnificent thousand years heritage and my friend’s invitation, I write this Malay poem specially dedicated to Ming Hu in particular, and the people of Machap in general. I hope Kok Liam and Ginnie Lim also like the poem.

Kuih Bulan kuih warisan,
Di dalam kuih tersirat sejarah,
Hari ini, masih dimakan,
Kepada China, Mongolia menyerah.

Berkenal Ming Hu di Mahkota Parade,
Dia budak, saya warga emas,
Jemputan ke Machap oleh adik,
Pesta Tanglung amat bernas.

From China, the Hokkiens brought the Ong Yah deities to Melaka in the 18th century. The descendants of them are Babas who like their ancestors are very religious and obedient. The Babas started the Wangkang Festival 173 years ago at a village called Kandang in 1845.

Mr. Ken Lai, the Chairman of the Wangkang prayers and procession sub-committee in 2012 had said, " We have received the recognition from the Heritage Department of Malaysia to list the Wangkang Event as a Living Heritage of Malaysia as it is a unique ceremony held once in a decade not seen in any part of the World outside of Taiwan and Mainland China.

A lot of items related to Ong Yah deities are today rare exhibits of the taoism, a Chinese philosophy attributed to Lao Tzu.

Construction of the Cultural Museum of Yong Chuan Tian is planned to kick-off this year end and expected to be completed before the Wangkang 2020.

Members of the public support in making donations to the establishment of this museum is encouraged.

Selamat Menyambut Hari Malaysia !

Machap Baru, thy beauty is to me

… Like those Quayside barks of yore,
Gulp by gulp, o’er a colorless river,
… The un-weary unloader shouldered
… Goods to his own river bank.
 (Melaka River Mouth)
On desperate jungle, farmer wont to roam,
… Thy classic face, thy village airs,
Thy kampung feel, have brought me home
… To the glory that was Machap
… Adding grandeur to Melaka.
(Machap Baru)

Unusual, but for this time I cracked my head to come out with the poem above, because two beautiful moments seized me when I am in the Dewan SRJK (C) Machap Baru.

  1. Kok Liam whispered to me, " The villagers come together on every village occasion "
  2. Ginnie Lim's portrayal of love to the young ones and not forgetting the old

Image Source : Kok Liam, Machap Baru

It all started with an Invitation.

Indeed an invitation extended by love and only love could bear more fruits of love.

Kok Liam, Ming Hu's dad and me are enjoying packed rice on the left side of the school hall, and there is no doubt or hestitation to agree with Kok Liam in recognition of the big family-ties in existence in Machap Baru.

That makes me choose the title of this blog post - Love takes it all - only in Machap Baru.

Next, Ginnie closes up to kids she could put her eyes on in between adults as she get off from a car, on Machap Walk at 8:39 pm. She has affection for the children and reading in her eyes, the message is clear,  for me to know that she hope the kids of Machap Baru would grow up well.

Kind of an affirmation, she is "telling me" that I am not able to leave the title of this blog post and choose another.

Machap Baru now has a practical Wakil Rakyat after 60 years of independence though all the former Wakil Rakyats are good. [ Listen her words from 5 min 10 sec to 5 min 25 sec ]

It is disheartened to know that mid-autumn celebration of this nature was not possible in the past when the elders proposed to Ginnie years ago but with patience over time, the hope become a reality today.

While Ming Hu and his dad make preparation in the school hall, Ming Hu's mum organizes the mid-autumn lantern competition.

Chang Sem Hau is watching a group of the men and women peeling the pomelo, a citrus fruit abundance in Machap Baru when Ming Hu introduced me to Chang.

After I captured the school hall during the latter sun, Kok Liam come to sight at the main entrance of the hall officiated by Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik.

My best blessing for the mid-autumn today is to get a hand embrace from Kok Liam's mother.

The whole festive mood is HERE.

Yong Chuan Tian is amongst the oldest temple in Melaka and it is dedicated to Tee Hoo Ong Yah and Peh Hoo Ong Yah. According to research by scholars the temple commenced in 1818 at the latest estimate. With that date, the temple has a history of 200 years.

The Wangkang procession is Ong Yah’s way to protect Melaka from harm.

The Melaka Wangkang tradition commenced in the mid 19th century. Yong Chuan Tian deities, Tee Hoo Ong Yah and Cheng Wah Keong deities Chu Hoo Ong Yah jointly held the Wangkang procession in 1880, 1891, 1905 and 1933 and the procession was well received by the local community.

There was a lapse of 68 years. In 2001, the procession was revived on the orders of Tee Hoo Ong Yah. Yong Chuan Tian organized the prayer sessions, built the Wangkang Barge and held the procession in the name of Five Ong Yah and it attracted the attention of scholars.
